Getting Started with WordPress Plugins

If you are a new WordPress user or simply looking to add more functionality to your website, then this is the article for you! This article walks you through the basic steps of installing and activating a WordPress plugin on your self-hosted WordPress website.

WordPress Plugins Defined

A WordPress plugin is an independently operating software package that is able to “plug in” to your website. The purpose of a WordPress plugin is to add or take away functionalities from your self-hosted WordPress website.

For example, if you are creating a website and would like to add e-commerce functionality or a shopping cart, you can install a plugin like WooCommerce, Ecwid or Shopify to turn your website into a fully functioning online store!

Using WordPress plugins is as easy as adding apps to your phone. There are no special coding skills required to install and activate a plugin.

There are thousands of free and premium plugins available to add functionality to your website.

Examples of plugins that can be added to improve the function of your business website: 

  • Shopping Carts 

  • Forums 

  • Membership Options 

  • CRM Software 

  • Analytics 

  • Social Media 

Step-by-Step Instructions for Installing and Activating a Plugin 

1) Locate the desired plugin by completing a search within the WordPress platform under the “Plugins” tab.

2) Once you find the plugin that meets your needs, install the plugin and wait for it to finish downloading. Once the plugin has installed you will then see the option to “activate” the plugin.

3) After you’ve activated the plugin, the next step is to customize the plugin settings.

4) Now that you’ve customized your plugin to meet your website’s needs, now you’re ready to begin using your new plugin to add or remove functionality from your site.

***In order to begin customizing your plugin settings, you will need to locate the plugin by name on the WordPress dashboard or in the Plugins list where all of your plugins are saved.

How to Use Your New WordPress Plugin

If you aren’t sure how to use your new plugin you can refer to the “documentation” section that is included with all plugins that link to instructions, faqs, and directly to the plugin developer.

It’s that simple!

Why I Love Twitter for Business: A User’s Perspective

Twitter is one of the world’s most popular social media networks that is in a category all its own.

I love Twitter for Businesses because major companies, small businesses, celebrities, and everyone else is on Twitter, and they are all “talking” to each other. We are no longer limited by the barriers of distance or time when it comes to communication, thanks to tools like the Internet and social platforms like Twitter.

Users are able to connect with each other 24 hours a day via real-time comments called “Tweets.” Tweets are limited to 140 characters at a time which causes the user to really get down to the business of getting their point across…140 characters, or less.

While it’s not an easy task, communicating in this way causes users to really “think” about what they say before they tweet it out to the world. This is especially true as there is no edit button. (Fellow Twitter users you know exactly what I’m talking about.)

In other words, Tweets are sent with care which translates into not only having conversations, but having “meaningful” conversations with your audience and customers.

If you’re a business looking to reach millions of potential customers at a time, then Twitter is the place for you.

Twitter boasts a user base of over 67 million. That is a staggering number. You’re bound to run into a least a few people that want to hear what your brand has to say.

The “Twitterverse” includes all walks of virtual life: young budding professionals, seasoned entrepreneurs, Millennials, CEO’s, moms, dads, you get the picture.

If it’s being talked about Twitter.

According to a recent research study done by Forrester, more than 78 percent of executives use Twitter daily and feel that Twitter has been influential in their business.

Considering the sheer number of users that Twitter boasts these statistics definitely make sense. The beauty of Twitter is that at some point you are going to run into your audience, you’re going to make the right connections, and you are going to get your message across as long as you are actively engaged with your audience.

Corporations and businesses are definitely starting to learn the value of using Twitter for Business.

Brands are able to use Twitter to build genuine connections which lead to lasting relationships with their audiences through meaningful conversations.

Businesses are able to gain valuable insights on what their customers have to say about them, resolve customer service issues, and to create brand ambassadors through regular interactions with audiences.

Another way that Twitter fans and business have begun to engage with each other is through the use of Twitter chats.

Twitter Chats are becoming all the rage. Twitter chats are real time Q/A sessions between users who share similar interests or follow a particular hashtag.

Some of my favorite Twitter chats are #WinnieSun #OrcaChat #BizHeroes and #TwitterSmarter. I attend these chats at least once weekly as my schedule permits.

I highly recommend attending one or more of these!

To republish your old posts, simply sign up for an account with one of these sites, copy and paste your article, and hit “publish”. How easy is that?

Medium allows you to republish your blog posts and get them to a wider audience, almost like a social media platform, but for blog posts. Setting up an account is free and easy– you can even sign up with your Twitter, Facebook, or Google account.

GrowthHackers is a site that allows you to promote content related to startup marketing (“growth hacking”). All you have to do to promote your post is submit its URL.

A genius way to repurpose your content is by taking a tiny snippet or a small excerpt of your blog post and turning that into a social media post.

The idea here is to build your brand by adding value to your social media profiles, so linking to your blog post is optional. Do include an image wherever possible to make your posts really stand out.

Take our a small excerpt from your post and use that as your Facebook post.

Search for a question related to your blog post, and copy and paste a section of your blog post as your answer.

Use a Different Medium

There are so many different mediums you can use to repurpose your blog posts, from images, to video, to audio… all you have to do is re-format the same content.

Here are some different mediums you can use to get more mileage on the same old blog content:

Take the main points from your blog post and use an infographic maker like Piktochart or Venngage to create the graphic.

Use your best blog posts as a “welcome” autoresponder sequence, a newsletter, or an email course.

28. Downloadable PDF

Take the entire blog post and create a PDF out of it. Then you can use it as an opt-in bribe. Alternatively, you could take just the main points of your blog post and create a downloadable PDF checklist out of it.

Create a slide deck out of your blog post and upload it to SlideShare.

Again, taking the same topic of your old article, ask a bunch of experts to answer a brief question about it. Then publish all of their answers as a new post, linking to your old post in this new one.

39. Use Portions for New Posts

When you write on a topic that overlaps with one of your old articles, use some of the old content in the new content. For instance, if you are writing a tutorial on how to edit photos in Photoshop, and you already covered one of the steps in a previous blog post, copy and paste those steps and images into your new blog post.

40. Write a Guest Post

Take the main points of one of your previous articles and use that as inspiration for a guest post. In fact, some blogs will even allow you to republish your old article as-is.
